Got this book for Christmas and finally got around to reading it a week and a half ago, finished today. What an amazing book. As the son of a French immigrant, the level of detail and authenticity that went into the scenery, turns of phrases, names, and locations was impeccable. As a fan of Christo-religion fantasy, this was an excellent take, the themes of despair and redemption were woven so well into the 3 main characters. Honestly if you have the emotional capacity to be beaten around in so many ways, and can keep yourself open to loving characters you wouldn’t think you’d love, you need to read this book. The acknowledgements show the effort Mr Buehlman took to make such a good period piece. I will mention a small trigger warning that takes place in the very first chapter: >!there is a scene where men discuss and attempt to go through with the rape of a little girl. it is quashed very quickly.!<
