Just past the 100 page mark and I cannot take this book seriously at all. I may be being harsh but the writing feels really simple and kinda dumb compared to every book I’ve read recently. Plot points feels extremely shoehorned in, backstories come out of nowhere and feel terribly random and contrived, problems occur and are solved within one paragraph, why? Also way too many names thrown at me within the first 40 pages and the sames are so plain I cant be bothered to familiarise myself with each character. The book was a gift from my partner and I think I will see it through but I am struggling. I’ll not be going near this author again. Has anyone else read?

I read it last year. I thought it was just ok, but I was never close to DNFing it. Despite its plot flaws I thought it moved along quick enough and it held my interest well enough.
I had read another Tudor book years ago, The Chalk Man”, and I definitely remember that one being better, but I’ve come to realize that these books are definitely not in my favourite genre.
Life is to short to read something you do not want to read for pleasure, dump the book and find something you will enjoy.
So do it.
Fill out the form. There’s a 3-4 week backlog on new requests, so it may be easier to just finish the book.
About six months ago I noticed it was on my Goodreads to-read list, but I could have sworn I read it. I couldn’t, however, describe a single plot point. So I got it again from the library and reread it. Every page was like Deja vu, but I couldn’t predict anything. It was just so generic that I think I’d read it at some point and immediately wiped it from my brain.
