    An open-ended question…

    Often when I’m looking for fiction that challenges me with its themes and prose, it can run the risk of being too unconcerned with the economy of its storytelling, with its pace, or with a sense of immersion. Likewise, lots of addictive page-turning contemporary stories skimp on thematic depth or beautiful language.

    What book strikes a balance between entertainment value and literary value, and left you feeling satisfied in both arenas?

      For both entertainment value and literary value, you cannot go wrong with the Nobel Prize winners:

      * Kazuo Ishiguro
      * Gabriel García Márquez
      * Jose Saramago

      Beautiful prose. Well-constructed story. Fully realized characters with actual character arcs.
