Palestine is a graphic novel that takes the reader on a journey through the lives and struggles of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. The author, Joe Sacco, is a journalist and cartoonist who spent two months in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in 1991 and 1992, interviewing and observing ordinary Palestinians as well as political activists, refugees, prisoners, and soldiers. He draws their stories with vivid detail and emotion, capturing their hopes, fears, anger, and resilience.

Like a brush flowing across parchment, Joe Sacco’s illustrations in “Palestine” bleed with the stories of a people. he sketches the contours of this contested land and animates the humankind that resides within it.

In panels bursting with life, Sacco reveals the pulsating humanity behind one of the world’s most intractable conflicts. His pen gives breath to crowded marketplaces and weathered faces creased by decades of struggle and oppression. Yet even amidst hardship, joy finds fertile soil. We see it in a girl’s smile lighting up for a passing joke, an elder’s eyes glinting with one more tale, shared laughter rising from cramped rooms.

Sacco unveils both the beauty and brutality. He adeptly balances landscapes where children play and checkpoints where they cannot pass. The burdens of occupation make their impression in a mother’s slumped shoulders and a father’s clenched fist. Yet resilience blooms even here like crimson poppies on a battle-worn field.

“Palestine” is a reminder that beneath identities are individuals, beating hearts obscured by politics and propaganda. Sacco’s portraits challenge us to remember their humanity—and perhaps glimpse our own. For beyond nationality, religion, or creed, we each seek purpose, freedom, and belonging.
