I feel like we’re in an era of really bad character names. Maybe it’s just me or names have always been a bit strange in books and I’m just noticing now. But it feels like it’s a trend to just constantly recycle names from book to book but with just a slight change at the end (I’m mostly talking about fantasy and sci-fi). And I’m also talking about names that just literally have the same vibe, if that makes sense
Am I the only one who thinks this and if not, what’s a character name you hate?

Well, we can’t get away with not mentioning Renesmee. 🙄
Kvothe
Feyre, pronounced fair-ah. For a girl who lives in a world where fairies are real. I hate it here.
Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings
Penellaphe, main character of From blood and ash, haven’t event read the book (and probably never will)
Anything that is a contemporary baby name on an adult.
Any one-syllable name from Star Wars these days.
Like how fucking small can that universe be?!
I read the audiobook of Winter’s Orbit and one of the characters was named Jainan. In the audiobook it was pronounced “JYE-nan” and it just reminded me of vagina the whole time
Any female in a book that is always named “Jordan” when they’re a strong female lead. Come up with a new name, please!
I was interested in reading Jim Butcher Jr.’s new fantasy series until I saw the main character’s name, Grimshaw Griswald Grimsby.
I mean, c’mon man…
Until the show came around, I always had a conflict in my head on how to pronounce Jaime from *A Song of Ice and Fire*. It was either “Jaym” which sounded dumb or “High-may” which didn’t fit the setting. “Jay-mee” never even occurred to me.
I can’t make this up Remington Honeysuckle Ford……like I’m being so fr
One of the reasons I don’t want to read Fourth Wing is because one of the main characters name is Xaden.
Duncan Idaho from *Dune*.
Not because it’s a bad name. It just doesn’t fit within the environment of *Dune*.
William Hung, Lane Lim, Peter Wong, Bruce Lee, meimei, Mei Ling. Like can y’all be more creative and inclusive when naming Asian Characters? Chinese names in books are so outdated. I can’t speak for other races but it grinds my gears…
Humbert Humbert
Jessica
Autumn Rain and her dad winter Rain and her mom Summer Rain
Not even an unusual name but for some reason in the robin hobb books, the name Molly really irks me and I can’t figure out why 😂
Edit: typo
The name Peighton in one of Kiersten Modglin’s books really irked me for some reason. It just seemed so try-hard.
Katniss and Peetah are impossible for me to take seriously.
Ik it’s probably been said 1000 times because of all the hate Colleen Hoover gets…but any name from a Colleen Hoover book. Most famously, Lily Blossom Bloom (who owns a flower shop) 😭
I personally love the name Lily… but I think every author does too. At this point it’s a writing cliche. 😢
Albus Severus Potter. That poor kid
Tristan… I don’t have a good reason, I just hate the name.
