Have you read any Tim Winton. I’ve read a lot of Steinbeck and I’d rate Winton alongside him.
Facing the Mountain by Daniel Brown,
Tony Hillerman is/was a mystery writer who really impressed me. Books are set in New Mexico and feature a couple of detectives.
The Anarchy by Dalrymple is about the conquest of India and the role of the East India company who had a private army there.
So as far as what your next book should possibly be I think you should read the; “Gabriel Allon” series 1-4 by Daniel Silva. He writes of an old Israeli spy, Gabrielle Allon, as he hunts terrorists and art thieves. He works with the Israeli ‘government’ and sometimes the United States joint missions. It’s full of adventure and spy stuff. Yw
