Around 11 years ago, my Lit teacher brought our class into the woods behind the school; completely immersed in the verdant landscape, she read Emerson’s Nature aloud to the class. Being among the critters and trees, among the flies sticking to our perspiring bodies (it was hot AF), truly hit me in a way that no other lesson had. I TRANSCENDED, if you will.
Now, I’ve had a collection of Emerson’s essays for ~10 years, and I still thumb through it from time-to-time. I love the movement’s break from tradition, whether through religion, gender roles, slavery, or politics.
Unfortunately, I’m not nearly as well-read on this movement as I would like to be. I just started Thoreau’s Walden today, but I don’t normally connect with nonfiction. For fans of the movement, are there any fiction works you would recommend?
Thank you!
