I read a fair share of apocalypse or postapocalypse books. I have very rarely found something that feels right in terms how characters behave and feel during these crises. They are usually way too cool, stoic and hero-like.
Ive just been reading commune, and the main characters kills someone with a rifle, and he was never using weapons until that point. The impact of killing another human being is basically zero. I still think about a cat I killed when riding a motorcycle 5 years ago. Also, people are barely talking about all their friends and family in those moments. I find it very unrealistic. Same thing with deep space travells and other mind-bending situations.
Do you know any books that do it right?
