When I was a kid I read like a madman. Every week I’d go to the library, come back with a pile of books, and by the next week, any books worth reading were read.
During quarantine I just kinda…stopped. I lost my attention span. Last year I tried really hard to get myself back into the habit, even going so far as to splurge on a kindle to try and make it easier for myself. It didn’t work.
I switched jobs and my new job has a lot less opportunities to connect with coworkers. For the most part I work by myself. Usually I passed the time by listening to music or podcasts but those can only take me so far. In an effort to get back into my old habits, I downloaded audible.
HOLY SHIT I MISSED THIS.
I breezed through a couple of Stephen King books and then got the full cast version of American Gods. I had read it when I was 16ish, but it had been so long I forgot most of it. Listening to it was so amazing. I finished it and got only partway through another book before I decided to just restart American Gods. It’s been a long time since a form of entertainment has made me so fucking happy. And the way that listening to the audiobook means I’m automatically pacing myself, listening to parts I may have skimmed through before. Monologues hit different when you’re listening instead of reading, Sam’s “I can believe” speech blew me the fuck away.
God im so happy I let go of my idea that reading was the only way.

I love audiobooks. I suffered a concussion and have Post Concussive Syndrome (there is no longer a bruise on brain but my brain still doesn’t function right) which means that reading is literally painful because my eyes don’t focus at the same time. So I LOVE audiobooks!
I love audiobooks, but fuck audible with their shady practices and fuck amazon in general.
