What’s the book suggestion that will make you lose all faith in the recommender’s taste in books?
I’ll go first: In Five Years. The writing was so horrifically bad that I DNF at like 50 pages. And also as someone in the same industry and city as the character it was just so so so badly written I still can’t get over it.
I had a buddy who hit on his first 2 recs, Grendel and brothers of the gun, both were great. I told him I was reading siddartha by hesse and he gave me his copy of demian, which I thought was okay but not great. When I returned it he raved and raved about walking by Henry David Thoreau. I had read some transcendentalists in school and didn’t hate it so I took it. That shit was the most boring book I’ve ever read and I never took a rec from him again lol.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. It’s one of the worst books I’ve ever read, for multiple reasons, and it’s the last book I finished before I realised there was absolutely nothing wrong with DNFing books.

Anyone that suggests Fourth Wing immediately loses credibility in my mind. The writing is lazy, the plot is basically nonexistent until *maybe* the last twenty pages and then it’s way too late for redemption, the characters are pathetically flat. I could go on and on. By far one of the worst books I’ve ever read, and I do not get the hype.

“The Midnight Library”, I found it so simple minded, so ill executed. So silly, really, that anyone recommending it probably has the opposite taste in books that I do. The premise of the book has a lot of potential, but the way it’s written is bland, almost adolescent. Could not finnish, unfortunetly.
And also whoever recommends anything by Ayn Rand. Those people can not be trusted at all. Don’t even feel the need to elaborate.

Lessons in chemistry. I know some people loved it, but I genuinely couldn’t get past 20 pages. I thought it was absolutely pathetic, the writing was so lazy and transparent, I felt like I was reading a bad essay written by someone in school, and I didn’t at any point feel pulled into a story or narrative. The presence of an author was so painfully obvious in every paragraph, which to me is one of the tests of a good book – do they make you forget it’s not real.
I gave up on it early, but I had asked my sisters gf who was also reading it, does it get any better, and she said no only worse lol. Felt like the author had some really basic, cringy tropes she wanted to write about and then half heartedly put a narrative around them.

**The Housemaid** everyone was recommending, even some professional writers blogs are recommending it.
It was a disaster. Almost every paragraph and sentence includes an _I_. The books service the plot twist. It’s so forced that was kinda cringe.

I’m actually going to go with your opinion, OP. I agree- I can’t believe IFY got this much hype!! I was especially disappointed because the premise sounded pretty good. But… everything else mentioned on this thread too lol.
Esp The Midnight Library-that thing read like a 300 page Hallmark card. Still can’t believe so many people love that book.
Also adding Where the Crawdads Sing to this list.

Oh my god, I’ve never met anyone else who hated this book as much as I did. I finished it out of spite and it was just a snooze overall.
Edit: I forgot to add my answer to the question. Twisted by Emily McIntire. The FMC wanted to be a female icon so bad but as soon as the MMC came in he just let him handle her and her comebacks were just so unbelievably cringe. I felt like I was reading an alpha and omega book where the characters acted like teenagers despite the strong language. I was so close to DNF-ing but I bought it and had to live with the consequences. I immediately removed the rest of the series from my Goodreads.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven – recommended as eye-opener and stuff.
Could not be worse… Read it in one hour or
so, found it incredibly shallow and irrelevant.
