Currently dealing with an unfortunate situation and the resulting emotions. I’d love to read books about hardship which are also comforting. I want something like The Book Thief by Markus Zusak – full of tragedy but also beautiful relationships and survival.

I’d prefer recommendations of books I’m unlikely to be aware of – not mainstream classics or books often recommended online. Thank you.

Clap When You Land – Elizabeth Acevedo

It’s about a man who dies in a plane crash, and his daughter discovers he had another family in a different country, which leads to complications with claiming the insurance payout, and the impact his death and his secrets have on both families.

It’s all told in prose though. Acevedo is a fantastic poet, and the way she weaves both girls point of views in, with such a tragic story, in such a beautiful manner is unbelievable.

I’ve lost my dad since I last read it, but it is a story I plan to go back to due to how beautifully it is written, and that’s the comforting side of it.
