Considering how many new books come from indie books that top the charts, it’s already a major thing. I would mind this less if it was just about the popcorn reads that traditionally paid the bills for the heavier stuff.
However, this need to market goes all the way to the stuff that is in contention for the literary awards and the upper end of genre awards.
It’s also causing book trends to go hyper niche and churn ridiculously fast. We are no longer having 3-5 year trend cycles. It’s compressing into 1-2. That isn’t sustainable.
