By which I mean I want betrayal. Hubris. Inevitable doom by both setting and narrative. Im not horribly picky- so feel free to aim wide!

I’ve noticed that in fantasy or scifi, it is fairly easy (relatively) to find these sort of tropes and that’s why I specifically want contemporary books- or at least books based irl.

Succession is a good example of what I’m looking for in a modern setting. Gone girl, any of du Mauriers works, count of Monte cristo, etc. I hope this post makes sense lol

    1. Similar but not exact; if you want a classic tale played out in modern times [ish – the book is about 3 decades old.]

A School for Lovers by Jill Paton Walsh is based on Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte; so it’s got all the love, betrayal, broken hearts etc you might want! It helps if you already know the Cosi storyline but you can get that from Wikipedia.

Not easy to buy new but if you are UK-based, there are loads of copies on Abe Books at low price. That’s where I got my copy.

    2. A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley is a reimagining of King Lear set on an Iowa farm in the 20th century
