My dad died three months ago, and my mom is all alone in the world. She has no friends and is basically just sitting at home doing nothing, before my dad got sick, she went nowhere without him ever, for at least the past 10 years or so. She was 100% dependent on him. She’s a bit brainwashed that she should hate other women and very convinced that women’s roles are that which they were taught in the 50s (classic boomer misogyny). She’s not online at all, my brother only set her up with her first ever email account this past month. She’s also paranoid, schizophrenic, and trusts almost noone, so it’s really complicated.

I’d like some (ideally) fictional books which could instill a sense of feminism and independence in her. As well as hope of surviving on her own as a widow and open up her worldview a bit.

So maybe someone has some recommendations of human interest stories for her? Ideally without explicit sex scenes.

Hope this makes sense! Thank you!

    1. This is familiar terrain, and it can be hard to find books for parents. I’ve found humor and the familiarity of murder mysteries to work well. Maybe a series with some funny characters and/or female camaraderie? My mother likes the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. The author, Alexander McCall Smith, has other series too. I’ve heard good things about the Thursday Murder Club, but I have not read those. Good luck!
