Been getting into books lately, and just finished Lolita. It seems like one of the main themes in the book is how much power and the insane amount of benefit of the doubt given to legal gaurdians. At first, Charlotte constantly threatens to send Lolita to boarding school. Then, Humbert kidnaps her, and because he’s her legal gaurdian despite knowing her for like 2 years and being her legal dad for even less, NO ONE QUESTIONS him removing her from school and just going AWOL TWICE. Also, Humbert is able to isolate Lolita from all her classmates and the Beardsley school does pretty much nothing about this. Really shows the danger of assuming good intent because of the family unit and leaves almost no wiggle room in case massive abuse happens
