I’m in a deep depression due to an incurable disease I developed in recent years, I’m only 29 and it’s killing me mentally. So I’m looking for some books I can read that are just all around nice and maybe give me the will to live again/keep pushing on. Stories of resilience and endurance/hope etc.
One of my favourite books ever is Girl with a Pearl Earring, so also any books with that kind of vibe for some lighter reading would be nice too.
Thanks!

I read a book that is very famous in India (and not in the States) a few years ago, it’s called THE GUIDE. It’s not always the most uplifting story (you’ll want to smack the main character a few times), but in the end it’s about a person finding the place they are supposed to be in. I absolutely loved it. I’d also really recommend reading (or re-reading) the play OUR TOWN. It’s so different as an adult, so if the last time you read it was high school, give it another go. I found it very comforting.
Over the Moon by Natalie Lloyd. It’s a really good pick-me-up book and has a lot of focus on finding light and happiness. The main character also has a lot of resilience, so it might be perfect.
It does have some sad parts but there is a lot of determination and beauty in the book Piranesi. It is trippy and atmospheric, lovely writing with a main character that finds themselves in a situation that feels helpless.
Have you tried reading poems? I’d recommend Baudelaire, Rilke, Emily Dickinson & W H Auden
Dostoevsky’s the crocodile. Short and funny.
