I have recently finished Pachinko and it took me like 2 days and a half (I’m currently on winter break from uni), I have been dying to discuss it with anybody.

What I love about this book is how the writer managed to tell the story from different perspectives so smoothly. I felt as if I had personally known every character in this book.

I think Solomon and Noa are different sides of the same coin. Her portrayal of Solomon was to answer the question of what would happen if Noa accepted his father, Hansu?

Solomon lived the life his uncle Noa would have had if Sunja agreed to be Hnsu’s mistress even if Noa never really realized that Hansu was his father. Nevertheless, the main difference was that Solomon never tried to run away from his background that he is the son of a Korean Pachinko’s owner, and that no matter what he tried he wouldn’t be a mediocre Japanese. On the other hand, Noa killed himself because he was ashamed to be known as otherwise than a Japanese mediocre even though he had done the things he judged his brother Mozasu for.

    What are your thoughts?
