There’s seemingly a post every week that wants to litigate what constitutes reading, and I’d like to see fewer posts like these for a few reasons.

    1) These posts are so frequent, and the answers don’t really change all that much.

    2) Sincerely, who cares? Why does it matter? Do people really have a chip on their shoulder about someone listening to an audiobook and considering it reading?

    3) The subreddit is “books,” not “reading.” If people are willing/able to discuss books, we don’t need to shame how people are consuming said books.

Since I’ve started spending more time in this sub, I’ve noticed tons of redundant posts. I think mods do a pretty good job eliminating the worst ones.

The rest, I just scroll past. How many times can we assure people it’s ok to stop reading a book? Or that audiobooks are books. Or that skimming is not reading?

    2. I have a feeling we’re seeing spillover from these weird reading challenges on Goodreads which I stay the hell away from. If you’re only reading in order to reach an arbitrary number, you could freak out about whether certain things count.

      I agree that it’s silly. But…

As a teacher, I think some people who find audiobooks a lot easier to “read” than text run into English teachers in high school who are not having it. And sometimes the reasons are legitimate – audiobooks are less likely to help you with the SAT – but sometimes it’s just snobbery. Genuine insecurity is always understandable.

    3. this constant validation people need to consider listening to audiobooks as having “read” a book is exhausting. you can just lie and no one would ever know
