I read this book almost 25 years ago, but I remember really liking it because I was a “tomboy” at the time.
This might be unrelated because it’s been so long since I read Caddie, but I’m looking for books where the WMC doesn’t give up her life for a man. I really enjoyed little women and the buccaneers. WMC is competent and adventurous, and maybe finds love along the way. Doesn’t have to be historical fiction, but I do enjoy it.

This might be a stretch, but I think Matrix by Lauren Groff might hit the right spot for you. It is about Medieval nuns, so obviously a different context, but a historical and delightfully women-led story.
