Generally I try to rate based on how “quality” the book is; prose, plot, character development, world building, etc.. But I have read some books that were beautifully written with brilliant storylines and characters, then knock off a star because I had to read 3 pages of an animal being in pain. Even when it’s a “good” writing decision, drives the plot forward, is well written or necessary to the plot or whatever, I hate it. I love animals too much and these types of passages make me sick. Even if it’s only a few paragraphs of a full novel.

Am I the only one who has a personal “unfair” bias like this?

Nah that’s totally fair. My unfair standards, if you can call them that, are that I never will ever rate a book 5/5. That implies a perfect score or 100%, and I believe there is no perfect book in the world.

Every book has a flaw or something wrong with it even my favourite books, so my highest rating is a 4.5/5.

I’m assuming you knocked off at least a few stars for the infamous horse scene in Crime and Punishment.
