I love horror, but not gore. I like spooky situations and creepy apparitions, but not the “shock” factor where authors are just trying to make the reader uncomfortable with weird or gross scenes.
Anyone have a good recommendation?

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It’s not exactly horror, per se… but it’s definitely very uncanny / creepy / unsettling in many parts. It made my skin crawl at times. There were a couple nights I had to sleep with the light on because I was legitimately feeling that unnerved. There’s just something about it… the format is definitely very different too, but I think it’s well worth it if you can get into it and follow it.
