As above – I’d really like to start reading some of Salman Rushdie’s works & I’m keen to hear about any pre-reading that may be useful to help me understand his style / writing better.

I’ve been reading up on what is best to read first & understand that *Midnight’s Children* & *The Satanic Verses* aren’t recommended for first time readers of Rushdie’s works (Although I am as of yet undecided and may bypass this suggestion and go straight for *Midnight’s Children*). I enjoy reading, and particularly challenging myself but I don’t want *all* subtext to fly right over my head over my first read.

I am aware that Rushdie was influenced in part by Gabriel Garcia Márquez’ & wondered if reading some of his works could help me understand the text fully or if there’s anything else culturally / literature wise that I could learn about first?

Both the two Novels that you’ve mentioned has India as the plot. MC is about partition and Satanic Verses is about a lot of stuff related to India and UK comes at the end. Other than reference to Indian movies, tail events etc you’ll get everything right. Satanic Verses is good if you’re into political novels.
