Have just finished this book and can’t see much in the way of discussion on it here, anyone else here read it? Would love to hear your thoughts!

I nearly DNF’d during the slow-going first third & forced myself to chip away at it. It picks up nicely in the middle with some nice character work and by the end it had me cracking through the last third in one evening and I left with a pretty good impression, especially for a debut book.

The world and setting is definitely the weakest part, lots of generic sounding named fantasy locations and a significant time spent travelling through nondescript woods and cities that don’t leave much of an impression. There are some nice characters and interactions and ultimately a pretty decent plot and (slightly rushed) ending…if nothing mind blowing.

Have had a look and the initial (early) impressions of the sequel seem a bit mixed in that it breaks up the character unit developed in this book too much which was really where this one hit its stride. I will keep an eye on it.

    1. It was a giant struggle to get through it. Biggest disappointment for me in a while.

Pretty cool worldbuilding but that’s about it. Stereotypical main characters, horrendous lgbtq+ rep and a plot where nothing happens for so long that it felt like it was 600 pages instead of like 300 and a “romance” that came out of nowhere.

I am just frustrated because I expected so much better and i bought this from my trip to another country 😅😂

I’m not going to read this post and replies in detail until I finish the book (I just started it yesterday), but the writer is currently visiting bookshops in the UK on tour to discuss it if you’re interested
