I’ve been watching the Spider-Verse a lot lately and been in love with how both films portray Miles and all the people around him and what it means to grow up, plus his relationship with Gwen. As well as the beautiful depiction of New York.
Doesn’t have to be about superheroes. I’m also open to books not set in New York if it fits the other criteria.

They’re only teenagers for the first part of the book, but Michael Chabon’s Adventures of Kavalier & Clay is a very very romantic book with a really gorgeous, loving depiction of New York and a superhero connection (the main characters are a comic writer and artist).
Coulson Whitehead’s Sag Harbor is one of my favorite coming-of-age novels, about rich black teenagers from New York summering on Long Island. Also a very nerdy book, with some comics references.
Idlewild by James Frankie Thomas is about high school students in Manhattan in the early 2000s.
