Hi there! I’m a passionate fan of gothic and gothic-style fiction, classic and modern. Some of my favs include: Rebecca, Jane Eyre, Affinity (all Sarah Waters, really), the Blackwater saga, Mexican Gothic, The 13th Tale, and The Shadow of the Wind – just off the top of the ol’ dome. What should I read next?

Ooh! Me too, so I’m following this post. I’ve loved:
Catherine House; Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey; What Moves the Dead by T Kingfisher; and The Essex Serpent. Our Hideous Progeny is on my shelf waiting for me.
Professor Dowell’s Head by Alexander Belyaev is a Russian gothic novel published in 1924 about a doctor and the experiments conducted in his mental asylum.
Okay so if you’re willing to read a graphic novel?
{{Shadows House}} is the best gothic fiction I’ve read this year. It’s about a girl who wakes up with no memories in a spooky house and discovers that she’s a living doll, made to serve the Shadow Family. The Shadow Family are nobles who look like shadows in human clothing and have no faces — living dolls exist to express the emotions they can’t.
There’s cult dynamics. There’s *so much* pretty Victorian clothing. There’s madness, both subtle and blatant. There’s scheming awful nobles plotting to kill each other. There’s Doomed Lesbians who run away together even though it’s almost certain that they’ll die. There’s gribbly shadow monsters that look like something from a Henry Selick movie.
It’s glorious, and I will recommend it to anyone.
