The only japanese book I reed (not counting mangas) is Battle Royal
Yukio Mishima is one of the giants of Japanese literature, his two most recommended are Confessions of a Mask and The Sailor Who Fell from Grace With the Sea. For more contemporary writing Sayaka Murata’s Convenience Store Woman or Life Ceremony or Yu Miri’s Tokyo Ueno Station are excellent.
