Nothing better than a good love story, unfortunately I hardly find ones that match my taste.
What I‘m searching for are more so literary novels that also happen to be centered around a romantic relationship.
While I enjoy authors like Forster, Austen, Wharton or the Bronte sisters, I rarely ever care about the couples in their books. I enjoy them for their social commentary and humor, but I don‘t have strong feelings about whether the main couples end up together.
This is because they tend to not actually interact all that intimately. I loveee complicated relationship dynamics, where the two people really get to showcase how they function as a unit. I love when the book gives me strong reasons as to why exactly these two are so infatuated with each other.
I‘m thinking of intense relationship dynamics you can find in books by authors like Margaret Atwood, Evelyn Waugh, Virginia Woolf or Iris Murdoch, just with a stronger focus on a love story. The romance can be quite dark, but doesn‘t have to be.
Unfortunately I don‘t really enjoy Sally Rooney, or very similar authors. I mostly love 20th century lit, but it can be from any time.
I hope someone can help me out!
