The Beekeeper’s Apprentice is the first book in a series by Laurie R King that follows a middle-aged, retired Sherlock Holmes taking on a young female protege with a very similar mind as his own. She is a teen in the first book and at that point their relationship is completely platonic, however their relationship becomes less platonic several books into the series (so it’s a bit of a slow burn, but I won’t spoil more than that). Despite the age difference, it never felt “icky” as they’re so singularly unique in the voracity of their minds that you get the sense that no one else could possibly be their partner.
