I really enjoy reading about worlds where the magic system is really well thought out. E.g who has magic/who doesn’t and why; what’s the cost of using magic?; different subclasses of magic; what does magic do? What are the limits? Etc etc.
I dislike when the MC breaks the established rules of magic for no explained reason other than plot.
Examples:
One Dark Window – people can be infected with magic but will degenerate. There are a finite number providence cards that allow the use of magic without degeneration but with negative side effects with prolonged use.
Spellbreaker – magic is bought/learned, not innate. When a spellmaker dies, they leave behind an artifact that allows anyone to cast spells they knew. Spellbreakers have innate magic and can dismantle spells.
