Hi all! I haven’t read a book for pleasure in a long time since my ADHD makes it very difficult. I’d really love to get into reading but I have a lot of things that make me mentally disconnect and lose interest immediately. FWIW, the one thing I have read and enjoyed in my adult life is the webcomic Homestuck lmao. I loved the world building, interesting characters, engaging dialog, unique fantasy plot, and innovative presentation of the story among so many other things.
I like the following in stories, generally (not all need to be present for me to like one though):
* Character-driven nature – if the plot is interesting but the characters are complete blank slates and I have no reason to care about what happens to them, I’m likely not going to enjoy a story
* Fantasy/sci-fi elements, especially with extensive lore/world building
* Some kind of mystery/intrigue/unknown element that keeps you on the edge of your seat
* Realistically flawed characters
* Any magical, paranormal, mythical, or otherworldly kind of themes
* A sense of humor
The following are some things that aren’t my cup of tea:
* Extensive description of scenery or something similar in a flowery/poetic way without advancing the plot
* Books that take a long time to get into the story or have a slow pace in general
* Historical/war-related elements
* Anything “tropey” – the BookTok videos that list all the tropes of a book as a selling point make me cringe tbh, and I hate the current practice of writing books with the intent of marketing them this way
* Books that read too ‘YA’ – I just feel like I’m way too old for this lmao
I’d love any suggestions based on this – thank you so much!
