Personally I like reading romance and fantasy, but my problem is it’s mostly written in 1st person pov.
To say I hate 1st person pov’s is an understatement, I effing detest them.
They seem so bias towards their own view of things, and discriminate other characters because of their own personal reasons.
I wouldn’t mind a sole chapter or so of 1st person pov’s but if its the whole book, expect me to drop it so fast.
Don’t hate me guys but for example Acotar: it was so hyped so I read it, all for it to be 1st person pov.
Don’t get me wrong I managed to finish it and Im currently at the 2nd book, but as I continue to read it through the mc’s pov the more I want to drop it.
For people who says it get better in the 2nd book y’all liars fr, it gets worse💀.
1st person pov is trash unless executed right and 3rd person pov is the greatest.

    1. i assume you mean “first person”

presumably because that is the most natural way to display an internal dialogue of thoughts and emotion relevant for romance

    2. Eric-of-All-Trades on

First person POV is useful for creating reader surrogate characters, and since romance novels typically feature some element of reader fantasy it makes sense to use first person as quick way to engender identification with the character.

    3. First pov relies on the fact that it IS limited. And, depending on the narrative, chosen with a reason, a purpose. There, to emphasize the lack of events/situation one person have over others.
How do you know if you best friend is mad at you? They (intentionally or not) subconsciously give you hints or elses, if not saying it directly. But what about a random person you don’t know? So the 1st pov tend to have this approach to the reader that the MC is “you”, knowing little to nothing until its time for things to be revealed, like your reading when adventuring in a new world.

Don’t get me wrong, but anything *executed right* is a good thing. Else, trash is otherwise. But again, it’s up to the person to like it or not.

    4. I’m really sick of people claiming things are bad simply because they personally dislike them

It’s ok to just have a preference without shitting on something

The reasons you hate first person are the reasons others like them, it’s to get into the characters heads and live there for the duration of the book. To see from their perspective entirely and to feel their feelings and experience the way they view things, it being limited and biased is the point

I prefer third person but first person is not bad, you just don’t like it
