My son is 5 and started kindergarten this year. In preschool he was so happy, confident, a leader in his classroom, and according to his teachers friends with everyone.
Since starting Kindergarten I worry about him losing that. He isn’t loud, very calm and very shy at first, so it’s easy for him to get lost in the crowd. He doesn’t have anyone that he talks about being friends with, and is eager to do what other kids are doing- not what he wants to do. I worry about his confidence, I worry about his happiness.
My problem is that he has gotten very quiet lately. He doesn’t want to talk about his day or anything that goes on, I have to ask his teacher to find out what’s going on in the classroom. I go through his Friday folder either him every week. I try to ask open ended questions, connecting with him at different times or places, he just doesn’t want to talk about his day with anyone ever.
Does anyone have any book suggestions that will help me connect with him or help him open up and talk to me? Or maybe a book suggestion to help regain his confidence?? I appreciate any advice

They have mom and me / dad and me journals on Amazon that have prompts for the kid and parent to fill out. Unfortunately they would probably be a little difficult for him being so young – but might be a place to start?
Let him know you’re there for him, maybe after school tell him all about your day and see if he starts wanting to tell you more after a while.
My husband and I made a point to talk about our day in front of our little one in early school years and made sure it was more than “not bad how was your day?” We were very intentional to point stuff out.
You could try prompts about the day, “did anything funny happen at school today?” “Today (insert story) made me laugh – did anything make you laugh today?” And so on
There was also a”who knows me best?” Type game that we really liked, that would things like “what are you most afraid of?” Or “what are you most proud of?” And we would play that and discuss our answers and that helped open up
I hope everything goes well – best of luck!
