I’m looking for books written in these eras in a school/university setting preferably with a dark, scholarly feel. I would be interested in any academia recs from this period but I’m looking for things more like M R James (one of my favorites) than the Chalet school books (they’re a bit outside of the period l want anyway).
I’ve read most of the common recommendations for school novels: Jane Eyre, Villette, Tom Brown’s School Days, Stalky and Co, Zuleika Dobson, Sinister Street, Jude the Obscure, Bending of a Twig. Reading the Mystery of Edwin Drood right now.
Autobiographies like John Betjeman’s Summoned by Bells that are written later but about the author’s experience in this era would be ok too.
