I’m a middle-aged woman who almost always picks the elevator over stairs, but I love books about mountaineering. I started out reading Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air, and I’ve read at least 30 books about climbing mountains now. Perhaps it’s even because I can’t fathom what is rewarding about slogging one’s way up an icy hill, feeling increasingly sick as you ascend, to…get to the top? And briefly resting, knowing that the riskiest part, descending, is still ahead.
What things make you think, oh hell, no, but you still love reading about other people doing them?
