Theyre up in the clock tower, looking at the archaelogical site in Anuket city (spelling, sorry, im listening to the audiobook). They know clockwork boys come out every 3 days.
Their guesses are that theres a cache of clockwork boys down there, or that they found some special ore….
At the end of book 1, they found a previously undiscovered wonder engine. The name of book 2 is The Wonder Engine.
I am going to kick myself if this doesnt end up being the case, but how, just HOW are they not guessing that it is a previously undiscovered wonder engine down there?
How did all the governments and thinkers of all the cities not guess that its a wonder engine either? Am i really supposed to suspend my disbelief so much and just assume EVERYONE is this dumb? I mean, even if it doesnt end up being a wonder engine, how did no one in the group suggest that as a possible answer? Why is brenner’s suggestion of a cache of clockwork boys even entertained if they know it takes 3 days to make one?
These are wondrous creatures/robots that no one can understand. Its a world in which there are 31 (maybe 33) large factory things that create wondrous things.
I mean, when they explained the wonder engine at the end of book 1, I was like “oh, that must be whats making the clockwork boys. Seems somewhat simple to at least guess at…. why have the priests of the many armed god not even suggested this?
Its like watching someone try to pick a penny off the ground and just failing and failing and then falling over and then you just have to go over, give them a penny from your pocket and say “just let go, man” and then watching them try again.
This is going to be annoying if the “how” of the clockwork boys is dragged on for more than a few more chapters. I hate having to assume the characters and pretty much everyone in the world are just selectively dumb about the main plot point of the series. It makes the inciting action (that the suicide squad here was sent to find out how the clockwork boys are made) pretty much a suspension of disbelief at this point.
Still enjoying the series, but this is putting me off a bit.
End rant.
