For example: For me, there are a few authors whom I am more interested in their own weird background than I am with their books per se. Specifically Yukio Mishima. He is a good writer and his books are interesting, but the man is infinitely more interesting. I find myself reading most of his stuff for an insight to his wild mind more so than the experience alone.
There are plenty of wild writers out there, do yall have any that you read for this reason?

Everything Akwaeke Emezi has written after Freshwater for me
Recently I discovered manga-ka Shigeru Mizuki and the more I learned about him the more I am fascinated by him. So I read his serial about Adolf Hitler. It was a fascinating story because we don’t often hear many Japanese takes on Hitler, not that Hitler is so interesting himself to me. So now I’m sort of obsessed with Mizuki and am trying to get my hands on his other works.
For reference, Shigeru Mizuki was a soldier in the Imperial Japanese Army during WWII and was basically abandoned along with his platoon by the Japanese authorities. His superiors would drive them on death marches for the purpose of death and glory and Mizuki saw how pointless it was. He eventually became anti-war because of how he was treated and what he saw. He also has a fixation with Yokai (Japanese monsters) and introducing them to the world via manga. His style portrays humans as comical looking against a horrific and hyper-real background so it carries a lot of cynical themes.
Thats what got me through Elantris, because Ive heard so much praise about Sanderson. Im glad I finished it, it was quite enjoyable, but Im not sure if I would have finished it without knowing secondhand how rich of a Universe Cosmere is. Excited to start Mistborn then work my way to the Stormlight Archive.
