I used to read a lot in middle in high school and I wanna get back into it but the stuff I used to read is a little too immature feeling for me now. I used to love stuff like shatter me, the cruel prince, throne of glass, etc. But if I try to reread them or read a recommendation based on them it doesn’t feel like it used to and the romance in some of them is so formulaic of evil brooding confident guy and “strong” independent girl that gives into him. I just wanna enjoy a book again and be excited to read something that the main plot isn’t romance.

Have you read Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson?
It sounds like you need to just read around to find out what appeals to you. I’d start with literary fiction, since that has the greatest potential to be rewarding. If you’re looking for something contemporary you could go with prize winners (and nominees), or if you are after classics you could use the Guardian 1000 novels to read before you die.
Prize winners:

I know that is a lot of books (and they’re not all winners), so if I was to recommend anything, knowing nothing about you, I’d say *God of Small Things* by Arundhati Roy or *Cloud Atlas* by David Mitchell.
