Recently finished this and I *love* how nobody tells you (NOTE: no major plot spoilers but do not read if you want to be as surprised as I was): >!what it actually is. Like its mythologised among horror geeks as this super-creepy proto-cosmic horror mindfuck, but then it turns out to only be that for about 1/3 of the time? Come for the Lovecraftian nightmares, stay for the Chivalric Romance, Napoleonic spy drama and frankly implausible number of art students, I suppose.!<
>!Don’t get me wrong, I loved every minute of reading it – the romance is genuinely very sweet and the horror really is as creepy as everyone says it is. But I just felt extremely… wrong-footed? In a good way. Are there any other examples of this, where we’ve just convinced ourselves that something is a wholly different book to what it is in reality?!<

romance? Damn, I wanted to read it but I don’t know if I’ll like romance in this type of story.
At least now I’m warned.
