I only very recently saw the movie The Lorax. This made me want to read the book (for which the movie really changed the ending). I vaguely remembered the book from childhood but not well. I checked it of the library, and I was absolutely blown away. Here’s a children’s book published 53 years ago that could be written today. I was born the year the book was published (1971); its prophetic message is even more fulfilled than I would have believed possible.

I have recently read some of his books and researched. Yertle the Turtle was an important lesson in my Creative Writing class.

If you are not familiar with these books, I encourage you to read them and read several critiques of each.

I am a high school English teacher. I bring Seuss in slyly to teach the lessons and give my kids a small break. Seuss is fun for low level readers and thought-provoking for high readers.

Did Theodor Geisel publish any adult literature under a pseudonym?

    1. We read The Lorax in my AP Environmental Science class. Or watched the (original, accurate, 30 minute movie) when we had a substitute one day. Something like that. And did analysis of it as an environmental education piece. It was neat.

    2. Did you know that “Yertle the Turtle” represents Hitler!?!

Learned that in school during Dr. Seuss week
