I would like to read something with Lovecraftian horrors, but not by actual HP Lovecraft. I already have a fancy hardcover collection of his works.

To be extra clear, I don’t want a slavering monster that is actively disemboweling the cast but, rather, something more subtle.

I would also appreciate if it was a fun read with a great adventure, rather than just spine chilling terror and paranoia. Not the biggest fan of straight Horror.

    1. “Lovecraft Country” by Matt Ruff plays with the genre a lot, and feels a bit more like an adventure book than a horror novel at times. It might be a good choice for a horror-adjacent Lovecraft book.

    2. Or the Cthulhu diaries aka sherlock holm vs cthulu, its a fun one, lovecrsft country is just too jim crow-y for adventure

    3. Johannes Cabal and the Fear Institute by Jonathan L Howard or Carter and Lovecraft – same author.

Annihilation by Jeff vandermeer has been called sci-fi, but it’s basically a true lovecraftian horror. A strange phenomenon, madness, a report after it all went wrong, a sinking unease and having no certainty left as the fabric of reality unwinds to show you how the universe really works. All in a dream like, mysterious state that leaves you uncertain but well aware of what happened. It’s the closest thing I’ve ever read to At the Mountains of Madness.
