      – The Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend
      – The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard

    3. Grunt by Mary Roach. It’s a scientific look at soldiering and the modern military. Quick read and difficult to put down!

    4. Comedy: Cold Comfort Farm

Non-fiction: Shadows at Dawn by Karl Jacoby and Isaac’s Storm by Erik Larsen

    5. Ken Follett’s Kingsbridge series (start with “Pillars of the Earth”) and Century Trilogy.
      Historical fiction but very good.

“All the Light we cannot See” by Anthony Doerr.

“A thousand splendid suns” by Khaled Husseini (“The Kite Runner” was great as well)

    6. **Olive Kitteridge** by Elizabeth Strout

**The Sun Also Rises** by Hemingway

**The Wasp Factory** by Iain Banks

**Cotton Comes to Harlem** by Chester Himes

      *White Oleander*: Janet Fitch

*Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle-Stop Cafe*: Fannie Flagg

*Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood*: Rebecca Wells

*The World According to Garp*: John Irving

Pick and choose from Carol Goodman’s bibliography. They’re all good but you should pick your own starter.

*In Pharaoh’s Army* by Tobias Wolff. It’s a Vietnam War memoir that is more about aspects of the conflict other than the fighting.

Vernon God Little by DMC Pierre is a satirical/black comedy fiction novel that focuses on how the media creates and shapes reality. It was written 20 years ago, and is more relevant than ever.

No Friend but the Mountains by Behrouz Boochani is a non-fiction that uses fiction writing techniques to tell his story in a very unique and interesting way. He details his journey as a political asylum seeker to Australia and his subsequent period on an offshore detention center Australia previously used to house asylum seekers.

    10. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz

It has hints of magical realism but not too much to take away from the plot. I’m a huge SFF reader but this is hands down my favorite book of all time that transcends all genres. It even won the Pulitzer Prize so that says something.
