So I’m thinking books like Babel by RF Kuang and A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine. The former is probably a closer fit to what I’m looking for, in that it isn’t based in space and is very grounded in Asia. That’s really the kind of thing I’m looking for.
Also recent, something published in the last few years, because voice and context very much matters, and how we think and talk about these things has changed a lot in the last few years.

Thanks you!

Macunaima by Mario de Andrade is a fantasy based on Amazonian mythology that is highly critical of Brazil’s expansion into indigenous lands
Maybe poppy wars by RF kuang? It’s a fantastic series.
