I’ve read lots of Stephen King, and my favorite horror novels of his are Pet Sematary and The Shining. I also loved Shirley Jackson’s Haunting of Hill House. Next in the queue from King is Doctor Sleep, and from Jackson I’m going to try “We Have Always Lived in the Castle”.
What works of horror by other authors would you say are similar in tone to Pet Sematary or Hill House? I especially like stories that center around the theme of grief, loss, sorrow, depression, etc., and atmospheric and psychological horror is my preference as opposed to gore or action. Totally different feel, but I also enjoy the mysterious background horror aspect of The Expanse and A Song of Ice and Fire. Just looking for some good horror!
