*A Brief History of Seven Killings* by Marlon James has been on my TBR for a long time now. But now I’m reading it, I’m honestly really struggling – it has taken me a couple of weeks to make it 100 pages in.

I think the issue is the combination of the different dialects and grammars of each character, the blatant darkness of some of the material and lack of optimism, and its length. I can usually handle two of the three (e.g. *Trainspotting* is dark and in dialect, but at least 200 pages shorter), but this novel just feels a bit too much for me.

I generally try to avoid DNF’ing books just because they’re difficult as I personally find it important to read challenging material as much as I read easier books. But I’m getting close to just putting this one down. So I’m looking for others’ thoughts on the novel – is it a rewarding one to finish? Does the tone change at all? Or am I just being a masochist if I force myself to finish it?
