Books with a stock character from one genre being unceremoniously dumped into another

Give me chainsmoking alcoholic detectives fighting against an alien invasion. Prim proper Austen housewives having to do battle again creatures straight out of a Stephen King novel. A typical boarding school novel, but with *zombies.*

I do love genre blending. I especially love when characters who act exactly the way you’d expect them to act in one genre are helpless when you throw them into another.

Any suggestions?

Note: I’d prefer more unconventional mashups, though any that represent this feel are still welcome.
