Curious about Barnes & Noble in particular, as well as snaller local bookstores.
With B&N, are the decisions made at the franchise level or by individual stores?
I understand that most bookstores probably only order books that have a sufficient discount and are returnable. But beyond that, how do they typically choose the books they want to stock?

Much of the shelf space is bought and paid for by publishers and the stock is drop shipped directly to us. Individual stores have very little autonomy in the selection of titles. Occasionally if I noticed a lot of customers requesting a particular book, I would place an order. (This was how Fifty Shades blew up.) If we are having a local author coming in for a signing I will place an order. Otherwise it’s all corporate driven.
