Hello! I am putting together a birthday gift for a friend. We’re both big readers. Here’s my general idea: a series of mystery boxes, each with a book and corresponding treats to go with that read. I would choose the books from her TBR on Goodreads.
I was thinking I’d write on the outside something like “open when you want…” and then list attributes of the book (“a sweet romance, quirky characters, and a bookstore in Scotland”). I would do maybe 5 or 6?
I thought the treats could be reminiscent of whatever the book is (salty snacks for an enemy-to-lovers book, sweet snacks for a romcom, healthy snacks for a self-help book?) and then maybe one or two more things, like a bookmark for each (I could make these myself to keep costs down), maybe some socks or a candle or a face mask depending on the book. Any other ideas?
Basically, I want to create a series of solo dates for herself based around books.
One concern I have: most of this she wouldn’t be able to see until she’s ready to read that book. Is it lame for a gift to be that you open a box to… a bunch of boxes you can’t open?
Any suggestions for that concern and/or suggestions for how to improve this idea? I’m open to all! Thank you in advance!

This is idea is so thoughtful and sounds like fun to receive. One thing that came to my mind was a cookbook that goes with a hobby or interest. My son got a D & D cookbook. A friend got a Disney one. And another got one for Lord of the Rings. You could pair one with a bowl or kitchen tool.
I got my DIL a non-fiction book about her favorite fiction author. I should have gotten her a t-shirt to go with!
I think this is a great idea. She can open one of them right away and she is able to choose which. Plus it’s a gift that keeps on giving. Whenever she wants to read another new book she will think of this gift.
