Hi ya’ll! I just finished reading Dark Earth by Rebecca Stott which takes place in the century after the Roman Army has with drawn from Britain. This period, commonly known as The Dark Ages, the Authurian Period or the Early Anglo-Saxon period has long been of interest to me, but very little was written down and aside from the actual Authurian Legends, there seems to be very little literature based on that time period.

Secondly, I am also up interested in Pre-Roman (prehistoric) Britain. I have read a few popular archeology type books about the ancient Britons (The Fens by Richard Pryor for example) but I don’t know of any literature set in this mysterious period.

I have already downloaded the sample of The Wake by Paul Kingston but it was hard for me to decipher and I only got a few paragraphs in before I gave up.

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated, but extra points will be given to books that are not mostly about warfare and extra extra points if at least one of the POV characters is female.

    Thanks in advance!

Hild by Nicola Griffith is set in seventh-century Britain and has a female protagonist – strongly recommend!
