My boyfriend is an avid reader, I want to buy him a new book but I’m unsure what to get him and would appreciate a book (or books) recommendation.
I know that he likes Cormac McCarthy and Dostoevsky. I bought him “The Centurions” by Jean Lartéguy which he loved and “The Wager” by David Grann which he also loved.
He’s very interested in history, he’s not so big on non fiction but really enjoyed The Wager.
Any ideas for a book he might like? Thank you!

True Grit by Charles Portis.
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
*In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex* [1820] by Nathaniel Philbrick.
*The Armada* by Garrett Mattingly.
*The Galleys of Lepanto* by Jack Beeching.
The Fifth Business trilogy by Robertson Davies. The Manticore and World of Wonders are the final two books.
Consider one of Hilary Mantel’s historical novels: “Wolf Hall” is about Tudor England and “A Place Of Greater Safety” is about the French Revolution, and they’re both excellent.
If you want to break the bank a little, there are places where you can get a full set of the Master And Commander (Aubrey/Maturin) books for a hundred bucks or so. I adore that series, but I don’t think the first book is a great gift all on its own; it very much feels like an introduction to a larger story / world.
If he liked the Wager and then he might like historical fiction and the book Master and Commander – they made a movie about it. Its the first book in a pretty long series.
