I’m trying to get into reading for fun. But one of my biggest struggles is following along with a story with heavy world building. I struggle to keep up and visualize what the author is trying to communicate.
I love fairytales because of how familiar the themes are and even if I miss something detail wise (like how a person looks) I feel like it doesn’t ruin the experience for me. There’s still, to an extent, a freedom of interpretation and imagination.
Books I’ve read with no issues include the Grimm’s Brothers fairytales, Alice in Wonderland, the Oz series, and The Frog Princess.
Books I’ve tried to read with a bit of difficulty include Peter Pan and Sherlock Holmes.
I know there are a lot of fairytale retellings out there (Eg, Cinder) but like I said, I struggle to keep up with the worldbuilding. But I would like easier, more whimsical retellings I suppose. Or at least fairytale esque themes with familiar tropes that I can enjoy even if the trope is overused. I also don’t want anything smutty like the ACOTR series, but romance is welcome. I shamelessly love the damsel in distress trope.
Any ideas?
